Data loggers: the way to monitor a freezer or cooler’s temperature

Data loggers are devices that sample temperature and/or humidity at regular intervals and then store it. The older models used paper and pencil as a storage method, but modern data loggers send the information they gathered directly to a computer.

Data loggers were originally created as weather forecasting tools, but they were quickly adopted as a perfect way to monitor freezers or coolers.
Keeping stable temperature in a freezer is much more important than most people think. It is especially true when we store deep frozen food there. The 10-degree difference in temperature might seem small, but it is crucial for deep frozen products.

Data loggers are absolutely necessary in professional freezers. The standard thermometer inside the freezer shows you only the present temperature. You need data loggers to check if there were any temperature fluctuations when no one was looking.

There are only two problems with data loggers that limit its usefulness. The first is that they aren’t independent. They usually need a computer or a chart recorder to see what they recorded. The second is that typical data loggers need a lot of maintenance - paper, pencils or linked PC - just to keep them running. Fortunately there is a data logger that does not cause this kind of problems: ThermaViewer.

ThermaViewer

Unlike other data loggers, ThermaViewer can work all by itself. It has a processor, its own memory and a big LCD screen, it doesn’t need any other device to compute and show all the data it gathers. Its two sensors can be placed up to 100 feet from one another, which allows it to control temperature even in large freezers. As everything is stored in ThermaViewer internal memory and is displayed on the LCD screen, this is the only one of all data loggers that doesn’t need any maintenance.

Create a Table Centerpiece That Works for Most

You have permission to publish this article electronically
or in print, free of charge, as long as the bylines are included. A courtesy copy of your publication would be appreciated.

You can create a lovely but simple and inexpensive table arrangement that will work for almost any dinner party at your house. First, collect your supplies, then just follow ten easy steps to create your arrangement.

Collecting your supplies

Choose white flowers and some simplefoliage. White carnations and a couple of ferns are readily available. They provide a simple, inexpensive white arrangement that would go on almost any dinner party table.

Choose a low round vase. This way you can easily create an arrangement that is pleasing from all sides. Remember that your guests should be able to see over the arrangement.

Choose white candles and candlesticks that match the color and material of your vase. If you don’t want to use candlesticks, you can just use pillar
candles on glass dishes.

Now you’re ready to create your table centerpiece.

Ten easy steps to creating your arrangement:
1) Fill your vase two thirds full of water.
2) Cut the flowers down enough so they just pop over the top of the vase.
3) Strip off foliage that would be underwater since it will rot faster in the water.
4) Start around the edges, putting one or two on opposite sides. Criss-cross the stems as you go. This does two things, it helps to stabilize the
flowers, and if your vase is clear it makes a pleasing arrangement through the water.
5) Keep filling in, making the middle flowers slightly higher than the sides so you create a bit of an arc. The experts say it’s always good to aim
for a shape to your arrangement. In this case we’re creating the suggestion of an arc or half-circle
shape.
6) Arrange ferns around the sides underneath the flowers, so it looks like the ferns are almost cradling the flowers.
7) Trim ruthlessly. If a flower sticks out, pull it out and cut it again.
8) Check the arrangement on all sides to make sure everyone has a pleasing view and make any adjustments.
9) Place your arrangement on the table and position your candles.
10)Like what you’ve done? Take a picture of this simple floral table centerpiece so you can remember the next time you need a quick and easy
centerpiece.

That’s it! Now you have a simple white table centerpiece that goes with almost anything else you use to decorate your dinner party table.

The Merging of Humans and Computers

02/27/2009

Soon the human brain will be completely interfaced with the computer. The benefit to mankind will be truly significant. The truth is that Arthur C Clark in his short stories talked about groups of people being connected in real time by neuron transmitting devises below the skin. You might even have all the world’s knowledge and latest research all in a chip connected to your brain. Today we see the beginnings of this with teens with cell phones and PDA devices used in Flash Mobs. Such a computer, communication, brain interface would be the next logical step as SciFi meets Moore’s Law and MIT completes their latest Media Lab exploit of Nano tech gone wild.

The communication device would be in real time, the “Internet in your head” so you can only imagine the opportunities, business and communication at the Speed of Thought. Instead of trading MP3 Player music on the Internet, you would be trading experiences in 4D, and thought using Nano-Tech computer, which interfaces with the enhanced brain. You could do real-time research with members of certain groups across the ocean and when someone made a discovery, the time to write the white paper or peer review would be instantaneous.

Thus cutting down the research time to next to zero. If you read certain books such as Prescription to the Future; and The 500 year Delta, Futurists book reviews and others working on these issues you can see where we are headed. Some are worried about this but I am rather intrigued on the possibilities for the betterment of mankind. Will computers be smarter than humans? Computers and humans will be one in this case, so we will be equal. Instead of the preverbal file swapping or file sharing, you will be thought swapping. The future is closer than you think, have you considered this?

Computer Consultant Skills: Do You Have to Have 20 Certifications?

02/24/2009

I’ve had more than one person tell me, “Well, I’m a MCP or I’m a CNA and I’ve got this one cert but I’m working on like 15 more certs and as soon as I get my 19th cert, five years from now, I’ll be all set to be a computer consultant.” That’s just a hunk of bologna. Know why?

Small Business Aren’t Using Cutting-Edge Technology

Most small businesses don’t care how many certifications you have. Small businesses are usually at least 12-18 months behind the curve from an IT standpoint. Sometimes they’re as much as two years behind the curve. There is no ego-driven CEO or corporate salesperson in small businesses advocating upgrading every 12 months just for the sake of upgrading.

Some Small Business Technology is Outdated

As a computer consultant, what kind of hardware and software and peripherals and infrastructure would you be working with in a typical small business? A lot of their equipment will be just fine and some will need updates and upgrades.

But there’s very little stress among small-business technology to keep up with the latest and the greatest bleeding edge. So that removes a lot of the early-adopter stress out of the equation for you, the beginning computer consultant.

Do You Have the Skills to be A Computer Consultant?

Do other people come to you for computer advice? Do people ask you for help with their software and hardware and getting their PDA to talk to Outlook or sync up their wi-fi, etc.? Are they coming to you for help because it’s part of your job or simply because you’ve developed a reputation as the kind of guy or gal that knows a little more about PCs and notebooks and software and the Internet and viruses than the average person? Are you already perceived as a good resource person for these kinds of problems? If so, you’ll make a great computer consultant

A Computer Consultant’s Skills Vary

It really doesn’t matter how junior or senior your skills are, there’s definitely a place for you in helping small businesses with IT problems. Just like there’s are entry level and senior staff within a corporate IT department, there’s all also different levels you can perform in as a computer consultant.

Enter the Laptop

02/23/2009

It’s a fact. Notebook computers have leapt into the global sales arena with the force and flexibility of Bruce Lee, effortlessly dispatching their desktop competitors with nothing more than a dynamic one-inch sonoma punch.

With wi-fi technology blossoming around us, the demand for laptops is only set to increase. The ability to play games, or casually surf the internet in wireless coffee shops and airports, will ensure that notebook computers remain incredibly popular.

Laptops, though, aren’t just utilized for leisure. Mobile technology is also beginning to dictate what happens in the classroom. This is especially true as notebooks are entering the educational arena in ever-increasing numbers. Indeed, schools such as Framingham State College, and the Myron B. Thompson Academy have both decided to use laptops as teaching tools in class.

Thanks to the adaptability and portability of laptop computers, retailers enjoyed a bountiful sales year in 2004. Consequently, everyone’s using notebooks these days, from sprightly seventh graders to zimmer-wielding septegenarians.

But can this popularity and the incredible global sales figures be sustained?

Yes they can. Once you couldn’t find a notebook for under a thousand dollars, but now there are entry level selling for seven hundred dollars, and even lower with coupons and rebates. Recently, Wal-Mart began to offer laptops with a linux operating systems, and 30GB hard drives for under 500 dollars.

So just how low can laptop prices go?

Can you say a hundred dollars?

If Nicholas Negroponte, founder of MIT’s Media Lab gets his wish, wireless laptops for third world countries will soon be available for around 100 dollars.

2005 - The Year of the Rooster?

Think again. This is most definitely the Year of the Laptop.

DVR Surveillance

02/19/2009

One area that DVR technology has gained wide acceptance in is surveillance and monitoring. DVR based surveillance systems can be used in businesses and homes where monitoring is needed ensure safety. By hooking up with a PC, this technology allows you to constantly monitor a particular area from a remote location. If you want to find out what is happening in your office in Atlanta while you are in London, you can hook your DVR surveillance system into the Internet and see live images. With this technology, video can be stored for three months or more. The need for videotapes, which are susceptible to damage and data loss over a period of time, is not necessary.

The essential components of a typical DVR surveillance system include motion sensors, multiplexer, image zoom controls; color quad processor and CCTV camera connections. DVR surveillance systems having image zoom controls that can move and turn from side to side ensuring that you don’t have to put more than two cameras in a room. You can also configure your surveillance device to record motions via motion sensors. Thus, the need to record everything for 24 hours is eliminated, as the device will only switch on when there is activity in the area being monitored. This will also save on disk space. The saved data can be written onto a CD or any recordable device.

VCR based surveillance systems provide poor quality video, and there is no stream-by-stream separation into image options. In DVR systems, every motion can be separated into an image in common formats like jpg. This makes recognition of faces or movements easier. Videos can be stored for sequential retrieval according to time and date. For example, a robbery took place between 7 and 8 pm in a store equipped with a DVR system. The owner need not go through the hours of recordings that are stored in the hard drive. This is because each of the stored segments can be retrieved according to the date and time of storage. These features cost more and all devices may not come equipped with them. Some DVR based systems offer audio to listen to conversations taking place in a room being monitored.

With all of these features, it is no surprise that many corporations, malls, banks and homes are installing DVR based system. In the near future, enhancements will make the DVR system even more effective and lower prices.

DVR provides detailed information about DVR, DVR reviews, DVR cards, DVR software and more. DVR is the sister site of CD Copier Software.

The European Lottery, Nothing Comes Close to it!

02/17/2009

The Euro Millions is a great way to play the lotto. You can either mix it as scores of folks do and play it alongside the UK lotto or even devote yourself to just playing this lottery by yourself and can potentially win just as much, if not more! If your like a number of people and you make up your mind to come on board and begin playing it every week you would clearly be making a wise decision as I am about to make clear; As you will have maybe supposed from the name - Euromillions is played in Europe, it takes place once a week on a Friday and one of the fantastic plus points about playing it is that it is not closed to the residents of only one specific country! No, the Euro lottery gathers the stakes of the nine nations that are presently involved.

There have been stacks of european lottery participants who have won a minor fortune just by matching the 5 primary draw numbers and just 1 Lucky Star. The probability of achieving this are 1 in over 5 million as apposed to 1 in 76,275,360 for winning the eventual jackpot. But in these cases from time to time the jackpot has rolled over for weeks at a time and thus is sure-fire to pay out even if nobody collects the top prize. You can also extend your chance by simply buying more and more lottery tickets.

10 Things to Do With Your Blackberry-No Not the Recipe

02/14/2009

Because you probably have heard about the patent infringement lawsuit launched against Research in Motion (RIM), everyone will only have to suffer thru one RIM shot joke primarily aimed at musicians and those who listen to jazz. This is my list of 10 things 2do with your Blackberry if it does not survive the RIM shot from the lawsuit to turn the $300+ wonder device back into an ordinary phone, or whatever it’s supposed to do now that I can’t get my email on the fly. This is not a recipe for a piece of fruit although the thought of baking it in a pie and mailing it to the responsible party’s does seem like a good idea.

1. Sell your Blackberry on ebay as a Treo with a model number that does not exist. I only got burned this way once, so don’t think it can’t be done. (I do not endorse or recommend this one! It’s illegal.)

2. Just look at your Blackberry as a $300 smartphones/calculator with some extra functions - and go get another hand held PC.

3. Clean it up, put it back in the box it came in and give it to your boss - tell them it’s an electronic rolodex/calculator with some other functions that they’ll never notice anyway.

4. Give it to your teenager and ask them to figure out a workaround for your email access, in case the RIM shot workaround looks shot. (oops another bad joke)

5. Paperweight - had to say that one….

6. Backup anything associated with Blackberry data and hire a software consultant to migrate everything to another platform. (We are talking 100’s of millions of dollars)

7. Wait until the RIM shot goes thru for changing Blackberries to Redberries and then you will have a few more years before another patent lawsuit. (That extra RIM shot was not my fault)

8. Use it as a Bookmark for all the free books you have received on Blackberry Addiction.(see number 5)

9. Check yourself into H P’s new state of the art ‘Blackberry Smartphones Recovery’ center in the Silicon Alley. After 1 week and a new handheld you should be cured of Blackberry Addiction.

10. Slowly pry you hands off your Blackberry and proclaim that you have no addiction and hope that the bad people in the lawsuits will go away.

Today’s Mobile Phones: Our Portable Windows To The World

02/12/2009

You bought it in case of emergencies, and to stay in touch with family and friends. So you’re probably surprised to find yourself using your mobile phone in ways you had never imagined.

You check your email, you text your friends, your phone reminds you of appointments, you might even use it’s modern GPS technology to figure out the fastest route to get to those appointments– And it’s been so easy to figure it all out!

Seems like everyday you discover new ways your mobile phone keeps you connected to the important people in your life, and keeps you in the information flow. But just how much are these little portable devices capable of?

Snap and Share

Nobody expected this to happen. First, consumers embraced digital photography with eager enthusiasm, and bought up digital cameras like they were candy. But even more surprising, now most digital pictures are taken with mobile phones.

The resolution may be less– They average about 1.3-megapixels. But you can instantly send them from your phone, through email or instant message to friends family, even clients. And many service providers provide subscribers with personal Web space photo albums, along with the software that enables you to post your pictures on them. Or, like any digital camera, you can upload photos to your computer, using the phone manufacturer’s photo software, and a basic USB cord or wireless Bluetooth connection.

Beyond Phone Calls

Those digital photos you snap are a great way for you and the people you care about to be a part of each other’s day-to-day lives. Similarly, text messaging (SMS) provides instant connection when your hectic schedule only allows time for a quick “Hi.”

Most service providers also offer add-ons to their basic subscription packages that allow users to instantly check and compose email, and do some basic Internet browsing. You can even set your phone to alert you when a new message arrives in your inbox.

Fun!

For over a decade, we’ve expressed our personalities through the ringtones we pick. Today’s phones take this expression to a new level, with downloaded sound effects and samples from our favorite artists.

The major mobile service providers, even most of the phone manufacturers, offer large catalogs of song clips from every genre, excerpts from popular TV shows and movies, and quotes from beloved cartoon characters.

But that’s just where the fun begins. You’ll also find screen “wallpapers,” sports update subscriptions, and downloadable games, ranging from classic arcade-style, favorite casino games, and familiar titles, like Tiger Woods PGA Tour, and Madden NFL. These, too, are available from your service provider, easily searched from your onboard menus, and the extra fees are surprisingly low.

For music fans ringtones are likely not enough. Mobile phones with built-in MP3 players have hit the market, capable of playing both paid and subscription music files. And, just like stand-alone players, they offer multiple EQ preset options, and sophisticated Bluetooth technology, allowing fast music file downloading and wireless headphone connections.

Portable Office

Busy professionals and students may forget to carry their PDAs, and often don’t want to lug around an expensive laptop. But they never leave home without their phones.

Following the lead set by BlackBerry, HP iPaq, and Palm Treo, all the major phone manufacturers have introduced model lines that integrate PDA functions with mobile calling functions and Internet connection capabilities.

It’s called Smartphone technology, but think of it as a portable connection to your office. Smartphones offer the standard PDA features; Calendar, calculator, reminder alarms, voice recorder, and word processing software. Most also offer miniature QWERTY keyboard layouts– The standard placement of keys that you find on computer keyboards or typewriters.

That means Smartphones are less streamlined, so they may not be the right choice for those who are unlikely to use these features. But many professionals have already embraced the convenience of integrating all these functions into a single unit.

With each generation of mobile phone technology, manufacturers have tailored their phones to meet our individual needs and lifestyles. And, despite their ever-increasing capabilities and complexity, the industry has focused on keeping them user-friendly. It’s easy to see why our mobile phones have not only become our favorite high-tech tool, but are constant companions as well.
