Corporate Performance Management

05/31/2008

Appraising the performance of individuals, group and organizations is a common practice of all societies. While in some instances the appraisal processes are structured and formally sanctioned, in other instances they are an informal and integral part of daily activities. Corporate performance management has sometimes been referred to as the Achilles heel of managerial staffing, but it is probably a major key to managing itself. It is the basis for determining who is promotable to a higher position. It is also important to management development, because if a manager’s strengths and weaknesses are not known, it is difficult to determine whether development efforts are aimed in the right direction.

Appraisal is, or should be, an integral part of a system of managing. Knowing how well a manager plans, organizes, staffs, leads and controls is really the only way to ensure that those occupying managerial positions are actually managing effectively. Effective performance appraisal should also recognize the legitimate desire of employees for progress in their professions. One way to integrate organizational demands and individual needs is through career management that can be a part of corporate performance management.

Performance appraisal is a method of evaluating the behavior of employees in the workplace, normally including both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of job performance. Performance here refers to the degree of accomplishment of the tasks that make up an individual’s job. It indicates how well an individual is fulfilling the job demands. Often the term is confused with effort, which means performance is always measured in terms of results. A student, for example, may exert a great deal of effort while preparing for the examination but may manage to get a poor grade. In this case the effort expended is high but performance is low. In order to find out whether an employee is worthy of continued employment or not, and if so, whether he should receive a bonus, a pay raise or a promotion, his performance needs to be evaluated from time to time.

Can Buying Groups Save You Money?

05/30/2008

Let me give you a brief history of Group Purchasing Organizations (GPO). They have been around for decades. Do you know what types of businesses get the best pricing on all of the goods and services they purchase? The answer is healthcare facilities. Do you know why? I’ll tell you. Nearly any healthcare facility in the nation that is making a profit belongs to a buying group.

The average healthcare facility belongs to two GPOs. Thousands of facilities join together to negotiate contracts with their vendors. Vendors aggressively compete to get awarded the group’s contracts. As a result each group member saves money on everything they purchase. Annual membership fees range from $250.00 - $20,000.00. The concept is slowly evolving into other industries. Today there are National GPOs for Universities, Engineers, Cable Television/Satellite Installers and one for Small & Medium Size Companies. Smaller GOPs have formed at the regional, state and local level for a variety of industries.

Pros and Cons of the National GPOs

The benefit to the national buying groups is that their size gives them the volume to negotiate bigger discounts with national vendors. But there are many problems with the national buying groups. They have gotten greedy and charge their vendors ever-increasing percentage of their revenues generated by their members. This reduces the amount of the discounts offered to their members. The national GPOs do not backup their annual membership fee with a money back guarantee on member’s savings. Some of these GPOs force their members to use their vendors exclusively. This has caused a backlash against GPO’s because members maybe forced to use vendors that offer poor products and services.

Pros and Cons of the Smaller GPO’s

With the exception of a few state GPO’s most non-national GPOs are local. A group of businesses in a city in a particular industry get together and form a GPO. The advantage is that each member has say in the vendors that are selected by the GPO. The other advantage is that the GPO is free. The problem is that a few dozen members of a local GPO don’t have the purchasing power to receive really big discounts from vendors. To get any decent level of volume all of the members are forced to use the same vendors exclusively. Thus the members do not have total freedom to select their vendors. The other major problem it that it takes lots of time and coordination by the members to manage the GPO.

There is One National GPO for Small Business That is FREE!

The Hospitality Buying Group, www.hospitality-buying-group.com, is a national buying group for any small & medium size business that has a totally FREE lifetime membership. Unlike all other GPOs, the Hospitality Buying Group does not charge their vendors any fees or commissions on purchases made by their members. Don’t let the name fool you!

The focus of this GPO started in the hospitality industry, but so many non-hospitality vendors started participating in this GPO that any small business would be able to use any number of the hospitality buying group vendors. Members have total freedom of using the GPO vendors or using their own vendors. The founder of this buying group was the committee chairman for a health care GPO for six years. This GPO is a value-added service for customers of several GPO vendors.

To get a FREE lifetime membership to the Hospitality Buying Group all you need to do is email customer service at questions@hospitality-buying-group.com and tell them you are considering becoming a customer of DHL Shipping Services or CFOToday Payroll Services. Provide your name, company name, street address, phone number and fax number in the email and you will be added to the Hospitality Buying Group database. You can then immediately start contacting the Hospitality Buying Group vendors of your choice and get access to the GPO discounts.

When selecting a GPO consider the cost of membership, vendor selection, how long they have been in business, and if you are forced to use their vendors. For small and medium size businesses the Hospitality Buying Group is a good no risk approach to get familiar with a GPO.

Are You A Genius? A Surprising Answer

Every Human Being Is An Inherent Genius

Hello!
I’d like to ask you a question…

One that I often ask of others, about the capacity that we as human beings have for
living with intentionality, purpose, integrity, wisdom and power.

And, here’s the question…

“Do you believe you are a genius?”

Now, what was your reaction to my question?

I ask, because this simple question often catches people off guard. And…their
responses are quite interesting. Because each of these capable, resourceful and
intelligent people I’m in conversation with, almost without exception, tell me, “no,
I’m not a genius.”

Now, could that be a “self-fullfilling prophecy” for such a person? Meaning, if you
believe you are not a genius, then wouldn’t you naturally find yourself engaging in
thinking, behaviors, and experiences that are on less than a genius level. Not
because that is all you are capable of… but because that is simply what you have
learned to believe about yourself.

The Fact Is…Every Human Being Is An Inherent Genius…Period

Now, If this is not yet an integral part of your belief system, it might be useful to
you to try this on, at least as a possibility, for a short period of time. You can always
go back to believing that only a select few are geniuses!

Now, many people bring up a valid point as I talk with them about being an
inherent genius…

If we are all geniuses, why are so many human beings living with less than what they
desire…and deserve?

And to that I say, there is no one reason as to why so many people are leading lives
that do not reflect their genius capacity. However, I will mention three things that
shed light on this matter:

1) Your overall attitude and belief system…including expectations that create and
sustain less than desired performance and outcomes. Complacency, which is a
manifistation of one’s beliefs and values, falls into this category.

2) A lack of needed resources, such as a specific skill.

3) One’s core relationships, that over time, create and sustain a powerful
environment that supports who you are, your vision and the direction you are
moving in…or not.

Concerning these three insights, I will have much more to say elsewhere. And for
now… You can decide that you will not settle anymore…period. Why settle for what
now is…no matter how good it is…when there is always more!

Now, going with the belief, or at least the possibility, that every human being is an
inherent genius…where then, did most people learn otherwise?

More importantly, if you were among the majority and, in the past, did not believe
you were a genius…Where did you learn that you were “not a genius”… when in fact
you are? Because if you are a human being with a healthy brain, then you are an
inherent genius. Period.

Now, how consistently you engage your genius abilities and patterns is another
matter altogether. The question for now is, have you had what you would consider
to be “genius moments” and have you ever performed on a “genius level,” with
anything?

The reality for all of us, is that our past performance and experience reveals that we
have indeed performed on genius levels at times. And, yet, most people, looking at
such performance and moments conclude, “I’m intelligent, bright, ambitious, and
even above average, but I wouldn’t call myself a genius.”

And Why Not?

What if from this moment on, in increasing measure, and on all levels, you now
begin to identify yourself as the genius you are, with all the capabilities and promise
that the concept “genius” implies? What then?

And as you think about that, please know that this site, the home of
GeniusDynamics is designed to be a continually evolving resource for you to use to
powerfully and effectively express more and more of your genius…

We are here to coach you in how you can powerfully use your conscious and
unconscious resources to engage your inherent genius in more consistent… and
most rewarding ways. To use your brain, your mind, your body, and your spirit on
genius levels that will simply astonish you and take you beyond your current
expectations.

To take you in the direction of, and literally into, your highest hopes and
dreams…for yourself and those you love and care about. Together, we can and will,
create an energy and momentum that will accelerate the pace of your generative
success… and the deep enjoyment of your life and career. Period.

Separating Tire Kickers from Customers

One of the greatest possible characteristics of any online work at home business is the ability to distinguish legitimate potential customers from those who are simply “looking around.” Those “tire kickers” who have no intention of spending a dime with you are a dead-end. Every minute spent trying to attract their business is wasted. If one can find a way to concentrate only upon real potential buyers, business will explode!

Unfortunately, it isn’t always easy to distinguish good prospects from those who are only curious. With many home-based online business plans, it can be impossible to know whether you are chasing after people who will never buy at the expense of losing real money.

In fact, those prospecting shortfalls are one of the greatest weaknesses of many work at home business opportunities. Hours and hours are spent dealing with people who will never even dream of making a purchase. That effort could be so much better spent dealing with hot prospects who are ready and willing to buy.

Fortunately, there is some work at home business plans that do help owners by sorting lucrative wheat from wasteful chaff. One such program, the Prosperity Automated System (PAS), for example focuses on bringing highly targeted traffic from search engines and then electronically sorts thought prospects to weed out those who are unlikely to buy. The end result of this kind of automated prospecting is that only serious potential customers stay within the system. The success rate is heightened and efficiency is maximized.

Separating tire kickers from customers is not a unique problem for those running work at home businesses online, of course. The very expression “tire kicker” originates on car lots where curious non-buyers might waste the precious time of sales staff. Every kind of business has a prospecting challenge.

Online home businesses, however, have a unique opportunity to use technological advances and carefully crafted strategies to avoid wasting time on non-buyers and to tighten the prospecting process in a way that can virtually eliminate the problem.

If you are considering beginning your own online home business, you should seek out a program or plan that pays close attention to solving the prospecting puzzle. Many systems don’t even consider the matter and leave business owners to sort through the “junk” themselves without direction. By finding a system with a good automated prospecting tool, you can increase your chances of success and minimize the time wasted in pursuit of those who never intend to buy a thing.

Catching the new wave in portable music

05/29/2008

Anyone with a computer, an Internet connection and time can
find and play MP3 sound files. It just takes a lot patience.

There’s a symphony of sound on the Internet, and much of it is
stored in MP3 file format. MP3 files — MP3 stands for MPEG 1
layer 3 — are compressed, allowing for reasonably quick
downloading compared to other types of audio files, while
preserving quality sound.

Companies marketing MP3 technology use terms such as “CD
quality” or “near-CD quality” to describe what the music sounds
like. It’s more accurate to say that the quality differs
depending on how the file was created, and the highest quality
MP3 file is near CD-quality. iPod Forum

MP3s are abundant on commercial music Web sites, and there are
stockpiles of illegal files stashed on pirate sites or traded
via newsgroups. MP3s can be played over the Internet or
downloaded to a computer and then played. The streaming audio
technique lets Internet listeners hear music as it’s sent from
the site, eliminating the wait while files download.

Downloading MP3 files is the most time-consuming part of the
process. Theoretically, it should take about 21/2 minutes to
save a 1-megabyte file using a 56 kbps modem. So a five-minute
song should take about 12 minutes. But modems often don’t
connect at the maximum speed because of line quality or modem
configuration, and that can drag out the process. Using a
high-speed Internet connection, such as a digital subscriber
line, speeds up downloading considerably, with songs taking only
a few minutes.

Download speeds also depend on the speed of the server and the
amount of network traffic. High-end commercial sites, such as
mp3.com, usually have optimum download times, while pirate sites
usually are substantially slower. A 1-megabyte MP3 file holds
about one minute of high quality music or several minutes of
spoken words.

Saving TLC’s song “I Need That” in MP3 format from
http://www.mp3.com/ at 28.8 kbps took about 21 minutes, while
downloading the song at 56 kbps took about 15 minutes. The song,
which is a previously unreleased track from the R&B group’s
latest album, “FanMail,” is 3.7 megabytes, or 31/2 minutes long.

MP3 players come in two forms: the software kind that run on
computers, and the hardware kind that can connect to computers,
download music from the machine and then play the files
independently.

Several free MP3 players can be downloaded from the Web,
installed and then used to open and play files, just like any
other computer program. Some solid MP3 players for computers
with Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT include Nullsoft’s
WinAmp, MusicMatch’s Jukebox and RealNetwork’s RealJukebox.

All three can be downloaded for free, and MusicMatch Jukebox and
RealJukebox can also create MP3 files from audio CDs. MusicMatch
and RealJukebox also have enhanced versions with more features.

MacAmp is popular with the Apple computer crowd, and there’s a
Macintosh version of RealJukebox, too.

Most MP3 players have a virtual boombox interface — with basic
commands such as play, fast forward, rewind and pause — and
some models also include a graphic equalizer and a playlist that
acts as a cue for songs.

After a player has been selected and downloaded from the
appropriate Web site, setting it up is usually just a matter of
double clicking the install icon and following a couple steps.

Paradigm Engineering and History

Those who try to define or somehow limit spirituality end up ignoring its nature and those who accept it blindly assign it virtues beyond its purpose. It is not just religion or metaphysical science which concerns mankind as we try to make sense of our present and future potential to address the ethics and technologies that could allow real growth and movement away from our history of destructive acts that develop warfare rather than our total potential as life on Earth. Here is a case in point dealing with history and the cultural contact that took place in pre-Columbian times with the Americas. It is my response to someone who thinks you can tell a whole new history in a few threads who also has not read many of the excerpts much less any of my books.

‘Science has found Roman and Etruscan settlements in America and many other cultures too. It is reported in the original writings of the first missionaries and it is in modern archaeology. There were Basque speaking communities in Central America found in the last century and Rongorongo of Ilavarta and Easter Island was there too.

No, in fact the problem is rather what Lord Renfrew has said. History has been shown to be a pack of lies. Lord Renfrew, Disney Professor of Archaeology at Cambridge University states:

“Archaeologists all over the world have realized that much of prehistory, as written in the existing textbooks, is inadequate. Some is quite simply wrong. What has come as a considerable shock, a development hardly foreseeable just a few years ago, is that prehistory, as we have learnt it is based upon several assumptions which can no longer be accepted as valid..”

I have both personal expertise and actual hands-on experience in Central America as well as the original languages which fieldworkers have found most insightful. My prognostications are always proven correct as new evidence comes forward (Hobbit, Bonobos - being two in the last year which further add to the Portuguese baby that is a crossbreed hominid) and there are examples of this in most sciences.

But what has served the ’social engineers’ well is that they can say things like ‘What is the peer reviewed opinion’? When there are no funds going to Phoenician Doctoral programs and no integrators of all science through all the world over all of history it is hard to have any peers.

Or they can point to another era and time and say something to bamboozle the student who sees the person speaking knows that era and people very well. But all these people or races and nations are not real history but rather a record of what politics and religion (social engineering) has done to separate people from their ‘brothers’.

Thus I have had to have a complete picture or framework going back to the first white people and even how they might have come into being. Some of the pre-white people ideas are very speculative but I think I have done that framework of real history and the elite families who managed it. But no one (or four) books can put the picture together and thus pundits (often paid by ’social engineers’) can say he refers to his other books for more on the point and avoids the issue. But I have to target certain issues and not the issue they might raise at that point in that particular book.’

A Stag Weekend in Vilnius - the Greatest in Pre Wedding Fun, Part Two

The time for a great stag
weekend in Vilnius , the capital of Lithuania, has never
been more perfect. Gentlemen, we know your wedding is meant to
be the greatest day of your life but who says that your stag
weekend can’t be the greatest weekend of your life? Read on for
some excellent stag weekend ideas in Vilnius.

This is Where I Ate a Thigh of Roe Deer and washed it Down
with Acorn Coffee!

If you’ve ever wanted to savour the culinary delights of beaver,
cow’s tongue or smoked hog’s ear- and who hasn’t? - the east is
where to feast. In Vilnius they’ve got a
specialty beer divined from both malt and peas and a cup of
coffee is traditionally made from ground acorns. There’s a lot
to love about traditional Lithuanian fare and not least because
it has ‘hangover cure’ written all over it. Imagine waking up
after a serious night on the tiles, so hungry you’re willing to
gnaw your big toe off, your stomach has that old time vat of
acid feeling and you’re dreaming of a greasy fry-up. This is
where Cepelinai steps up to the plate. Described by a respected
food writer as “a Zeppelin-shaped parcel of potato dough” filled
with meat, covered in a sauce of onions, cream, butter and bacon
bits, (and bacon bits, magic words in anyone’s language)
Cepelinai hits the spot to reline the stomach and imbue the
consumer with a warm inner glow of nothing short but pure
satisfaction. Almost spiritual. So rich, so creamy, so oniony,
so meaty, so bacony and so simple in its delight that it makes
you want to take the Tesco ‘Five a day’ and moon the daylights
out of Gordon Ramsay and that bloody Gillian
you-are-what-you-eat-woman. Taste it. Love it. Become a new man.

And This is Where I Drank this Random Honey Stuff

So what are you waiting for? Get involved. Knowing that you’ve
got a sure fire hangover cure gives you no legitimate excuse for
turning down the God bestowed nectar that is Lithuania’s Special
Honey Mead Balsam. Amateurs need not apply. There are two main
types; Suktinis at 50% proof and Zalgaris which is a scorcher at
a staggering 75%. Seventy-five. You could, however just as
easily stick to the vast array of boutique beers from the
surrounding breweries, the best of which are the pale bronze
lagers made from both malt and peas, a fine drop by the name of
‘Sirvenos’ is a good place to start. You’ll also find many rich
reddish brown lagers with hints of whiskey and sherry
undertones.

Vilnius is Baltic So Will I Freeze My B@$$s Off?

Maybe. But not necessarily. Just like the UK January is the
most freezing month with lows hitting a chillin’ -9C. The record
low for Vilnius is -30C but that was so long ago that no one
really remembers and the record high is a toasty 35C. But
generally from April to October Vilnius is cool without being
cold and warm without being sweltering.

Average January Temperature: -2 C

Average July Temerature: 19C

Weird But Cool Lithuanian Facts: In a move that can only
be described as unconventional, the Lituanian Basketball team,
which rocketed to fame in the early 90s after scooping the
bronze medal at the Barcelona Olympics, is supported by none
other than the American Pyschedelic rock band ‘The Grateful
Dead’. Official team photos show the athletes sporting highly
fetching tie died shorts in a varying assortments of lime,
magenta and acid pink. Dude.

Lithuania is the proud home of the world’s largest TV sculpture.
Artist Gintaras Karosas created the work entitled “LNK Infotree”
using just under three thousand individual television sets.
Lithuanian man/beast Antanas Kontrimas, who reportedly hadn’t
shaved in a quarter of a century, set the Guinness World record
for the greatest weight lifted by a human beard. On the 11
September 2004, Kontrimas lifted a 136 pound woman with only his
whiskers. On previous occasions Kontrimas carried a sack of
grain, a TV host and an entire keg of homemade beer. Ladies, get
in line.

So How Do I Organise All the Travelly Details Without
Screwing Up?

Easy. There’s a London-based company by the name of Chillisauce
who employ people who really enjoy tailoring packages to stag groups
to Vilnius, and a whole bunch of other cities. They do all
the phoning, reserving and then come up with ideas just for you
and your friends. All you actually have to do is turn up to have
the most kicking ass time.

And there’s a whole map of possibilities for a great stag
weekend, for some excellent adventure filled ideas check out
chillisauce where they will tailor a Stag
Do in Vilnius just for you and any number of your best
friends. Now that’s what we like to call service!

Employees - Money Is Not The Only Inspiration

05/27/2008

How to inspire employees to perform better and continue retaining their loyalty with the company? Ask this question around and the first option may be given as to raise the pay. Is raising the salary the only method of inspiring employees? Let us look at some others that can make a difference.

The first thought of money and inspiration means that we subconsciously compare our employees to machines. Add more fuel, maintain and it will perform better but that is for machines. Humans are certainly not machines. If money was the main motivating factor, you would not find people working for humanitarian and non profit causes without any money in return.

So when we think about motivating employees, we have to first look at them as thinking emotional beings with aspirations, their personality contradictions, and all the pluses and minuses of a human being. How does a thank you change the mood, especially when it was not expected? Thanking can change the mood totally, because by thanking we are acknowledging the good work done by some one. That acknowledgment is a big reward. I appreciate the good work being done by you and I thank for all the help that you have been to me and the organization. Send such a note once a month or so and watch the performance sky rocket.

Sorry. Yes I agree that this is a advice repeated umpteen times in as many articles. But I am still writing this because we forget about it. Many times, in our frustration and anger, we tend to forget that our anger is being released on a third party. The worst part is that we forget to say sorry. Sometimes, rather than a plain sorry, we should call the employee and discuss about the problems we were facing that gave rise to our anger. Make him/her a partner in your agony and say sorry. You will get not only a satisfied employee but sometimes a good friend for life.

Employees are as human as bosses are. Once employees realize that bosses are people of high character they would automatically get motivated to work with the company and for the company. Motivating them becomes difficult when we are ourselves lacking in some appreciable human quality. The golden rule should be to make yourself worthy of respect and you will not only get co-operation but a team that works for you to achieve a common goal. Good Luck.
